A Tie Project

I have a LOT of ties. Has anyone any ideas or experience to share with me of how I could turn them into something "quilt like"? Has anyone made things with ties? My friend and I would love to know . . .

  3. Hi Annie

I think you should unpick them, so you are left with strips of fabric that you could do something clever with .. if you are not having too much fun with your hairy friend!

  7. This is so funny -- I was just looking at hubby's ties (that he never wears) last night and imagining quilts. I think they'd look great in a dresden plate pattern!

  9. Annie,
just google 'tie quilts' in images and I am sure you'll find something.. I know there is a blog out there (not bookmarked sorry) dedicated to tie quilts!
Lynette Andersons blog had a lovely pic of a lampshade made out of ties at a restaurant she visited, very cool...

  11. hahahahaha .... word verification is 'brapop' - doesn't that mean it's time to get a bigger bra? Or at least stop your friend wearing it?

A bazillion years ago (well... 28) my mother made a skirt from my dad's old ties. She opened them out then sewed them together, keeping the lining intact. The end result was a handkerchief hemline a la Dresden Plate.

Looking forward to seeing what you do.

  12. I remember a few years ago now when my mum, sister and I went to a quilt show in Ballarat. Up hanging on the wall was a quilt made from ties. Apparently the lady's daughter worked in a newsroom and they always had ties which were discarded when they no longer wanted them so she decided to unpick them and use them up. I think she actually had them in the shape of the tie but unpicked the backs to have fabric to connect them together. It looked so beautiful too with all the different silks and fabrics and the colors were really nice too.

  18. Hi Annie
At the recent quilt fair there was an amazing quilt made from ties using the tumbling block design. I have also seen them turned into skirts. S

  21. My SIL made a king size quilt out of just Micky Mouse Ties... silk ones at that! Then I've also seen retro like skirts out of them... using the point of the tie at the hem. I will see if I can scrouge up a picture for you to see of the quilt. It's really neat! Yes, and also... bags too... where you use old blue jeans as the bags and ties as the shoulder straps and to use to go thru the belt loops on the blue jeans.... just use your imaginations and you will come up with something fun and great!
